Top 5 mistakes people make when building their dream wardrobe

Most of us desire to have an amazing wardrobe. Who wouldn’t want to wake up every morning, look in their closet, and pull out a fabulous outfit every time? Truth is, when we decide to embark on this wardrobe journey, we tend to make multiple mistakes along the way costing us valuable time and money. In this article, Wardrobe Wellness counts down the top 5 mistakes people make when trying to build their dream wardrobe:

NUMBER 5: Having no game plan

Like anything in life, you need a plan. Start by writing down the pros and cons about your current collection. Then, identify what you’re looking to accomplish with your new one and plan out how you’re going to achieve it.* If you get a bit off track, just look back at your plan for a little reminder.

*Pro Tip: Planning your goals in time intervals (i.e. monthly) makes this task less daunting.

NUMBER 4: Removing all your current pieces at once

Just because you’re building a new wardrobe, doesn’t mean you completely throw out all your current items. This can lead to irresponsible spending when trying to replenish your closet and will leave you full of regrets. Going broke over fashion is NEVER a good idea.

NUMBER 3: Buying only what is trendy at the moment

There’s nothing wrong with incorporating trends; however, your wardrobe should not only consist of them. It’s the easiest way to unnecessarily spend money each season to keep up with a particular style that changes at least every 4 - 6 months.

NUMBER 2: Choosing poor quality pieces for more options

There’s a reason why the saying “quality over quantity” resonates with so many people. One of the underlying messages of this quote has to do with longevity. In the short term, you’ll have a closet full of shiny, new clothes. However, there are very few long term benefits to this as most poor quality items are ruined quite easily (usually within the first wash).

NUMBER 1: Purchasing pieces for the body you want and not the one you have.

Most of us have insecurities around our bodies. It’s an unfortunate reality most people face on a daily basis. The number one mistake people make in this process is purchasing pieces for the body they “plan” to have in the next few months (think New Year’s resolutions). This often results in failure and can lead you further down the path of insecurity. Just remember dressing for the moment will ultimately make you feel amazing in the moment.

So there you have it. The top 5 mistakes people make when trying to build their dream wardrobe. If you’ve never made any of these mistakes then congratulations you’re ahead of the curve :) If you have, not to worry! It’s repairable and Wardrobe Wellness is here to help!
